Amazon added 110,000 employees in 2016, in large part due to massive hiring at its fulfillment centers. On Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, they’ll up that tally by 50,000 jobs. The company is making on-the-spot hires at its fulfillment centers at 12 locations around the country.
The move from traditional retail to e-commerce has led to a mini-apocalypse of brick-and-mortar jobs, but the upside is a boom in jobs at fulfillment centers. In fact, at least one economist says that e-commerce is creating more jobs than it destroys — more than five times as many. Fulfillment center jobs also pay about 30 percent more than old-school retail gigs and are often full-time and benefitted positions.
That’s not to say that these jobs are easy. Per Inc:
These are real jobs. They’re hard work, and require some manual labor and difficult conditions at times. From what I can tell, Amazon is upfront about the fact that its fulfillment centers can be noisy, and that the temperatures can range from a low of 60 (OK) to as high as 90 degrees.
Most of the jobs pay between $11.50 and $14 an hour, and full-time positions include healthcare benefits that start on day 1, paid time off, 401(k) match and pre-paid tuition assistance. Part-time associates get healthcare benefits after 90 days and tuition pre-payment.
